JOB OPPORTUNITY: Director of Finance & Operations

About the position
Treatment Action Group (TAG) is seeking a highly motivated and organized Director of Finance and Operations to manage and help execute its operations, with a strong focus on building systems for more efficient work and communication within and across the organization. This position will report to the Executive Director, and be based in New York City.

The Director of Finance and Operations will supervise TAG’s Finance Manager and Administrator.  The Director of Finance and Operations will work closely with program staff – especially the Deputy Executive Director of Programs – and with the Board of Directors and its committees.

Key Responsibilities:

Finance

  • Directly supervise TAG’s Finance Manager; work with Executive Director, Finance Manager, Board Treasurer, and staff to oversee and implement TAG’s financial budgeting and reporting cycle, including budgeting, analyzing monthly financial reports, grant budget and compliance requirements, evaluating and negotiating with vendors and supervising contracts and grants;
  • Have a firm understanding of TAG’s budget and the reasons for any variances in actual revenues and expenses;
  • With the Executive Director, Finance Manager, and with input from the Board’s Treasurer and Finance Committee, oversee and manage financial information flows among the board, executive director, and relevant staff;
  • Lead processes to strengthen long-term financial planning at TAG, managing cash flow over multiple-year grants, maximizing reserves, optimizing bequests;
  • Manage annual audit performed by external accounting firm.

Operations

  • Directly supervise TAG’s Administrator/Office Manager, and manage and coordinate all aspects of TAG’s administration and operations;
  • Systematize TAG’s approach to file sharing and storage;
  • Build management system to allow for tracking of contracts, grants, memoranda of understanding (MoU), payments and invoices and negotiate and manage MoUs with vendors/consultants;
  • Manage TAG’s internet and telecommunications infrastructure, including updating information and internet technology (IT) and digital security to ensure best standards are in use;
  • Lead human resource functions for TAG, including managing benefits and posting of new positions and interview process for and hiring of new staff;
  • Lead and oversee renewals of TAG’s insurance policies, staff policy and procedures manual, and create other standard operating procedures (SOPs) to more systematically codify, simplify, and streamline the organization’s ongoing work, and ensure that these are updated periodically to reflect changes in federal, state, and local law and regulatory requirements;
  • Assist Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director for Programs with special projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • Self-starter with strong leadership qualities who is willing to roll up sleeves and work hands-on;
  • Excellent financial skills including direct experience developing and implementing grant-based budgets;
  • Demonstrable experience (at least five to seven years) with non-profit administration, and especially in building effective, and sustainable organizational systems to improve efficiencies;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Highly organized with strong follow up skills;
  • Intellectual curiosity and ability to quickly grasp complex concepts;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Quickbooks, and Dropbox required; project management and customer relations management software experience and expertise strongly preferred;
  • Experience simultaneously managing multiple projects;
  • Ability to work effectively with staff members and supervisors who are often traveling or located out of the office;
  • Knowledge of employee benefits and human resource issues;
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent desirable; advanced degrees in management, accounting, finance, or administration preferred.

Salary & Benefits
The salary will be $70,000-$80,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and skills. TAG offers a competitive benefits package that includes fully-employer paid health insurance and generous paid vacation (starting at four weeks, plus additional paid sick leave and holidays).
