TB R & D Report 2005-2010

Tuberculosis Research and Development: 2011 Report on Tuberculosis Research Funding trends, 2005-2010

By Eleonora Jiménez-Levi

October 2011 - For the sixth year, the Treatment Action Group publishes the latest data on global investments in tuberculosis (TB) research and development (R&D). The 2011 Report on Tuberculosis Research Funding Trends: 2005—2010 provides six years of comprehensive spending data and measures current levels against the funding targets defined by the original Global Plan to Stop TB 2006 - 2015 and the most recently updated 2011 - 2015 version published in 2010. The report offers year-to-year data on the leading TB research funders and analyzes funding trends across six TB research categories and four donor sectors. Most important, the report examines the state of TB research funding and underscores the urgency of adequate and sustained funding to produce the powerful new tools the world needs to eliminate TB as a public health threat by 2050.

The 2011 report finds 71 donors invested $617.1 million in TB R&D in 2010—a 73% increase over 2005 levels but no growth since 2009. Of the 71 donors, the top 30 accounted for 97%, or $601 million, of the global total. Nineteen new donors were captured in this year’s report, including three who invested at least $1 million in TB drugs and operational research.

While global TB R&D funding remained flat in 2010, it only represented one-third of the $2 billion required annually to develop new tools to prevent, treat, and ultimately eliminate TB. To protect the recent scientific progress made in TB R&D and close the $1.4 billion gap, TB funders need to remain committed to TB research and donors from emerging economics must scale up their investments.
