Joseph McConnell joined the Treatment Action Group staff in January 2005 as administrator, a position encompassing office management and program support. Joseph’s involvement with TAG follows 25 years of nonprofit arts administration. After beginning as an actor and singer in theater and opera, Joseph shifted to theater production and management. He acquired significant experience in fund-raising and company management, and also served as a professional casting director for stage, film, and television. He has published articles on casting and fund-raising topics.
Joseph’s work at TAG also builds on decades of volunteer support of political, HIV/AIDS, and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) causes, including participation in early ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) marches and demonstrations. He volunteered for ten years for the Buddy Program at Gay Men’s Health Crisis in New York, providing long-term peer support to people with HIV/AIDS. He also has participated in various initiatives over the years to help the U.S. Democratic Party more effectively address LGBT concerns.
