Broad Coalition of HIV/AIDS Advocates and Advocacy Organizations Urge Patient Groups to Support AllTrials Initiative

Reported Pharmaceutical Association Efforts to Enlist Opposition to the Initiative Are Decried

The undersigned HIV/AIDS advocates and advocacy organizations today issue a call to patient groups worldwide to sign up to support the AllTrials initiative (www.alltrials.net). Led by Dr. Ben Goldacre and Sense About Science, AllTrials aims to address the dangerous information gap that opens up when data from clinical trials of new therapies or therapeutic approaches are not reported (or the trials are not even registered). The initiative has already achieved overwhelming support from a multitude of highly respected organizations, medical associations, patient groups, pharmaceutical companies, and other entities and individuals.

In light of these facts, it is extremely disturbing and regrettable that, according to a report in the Guardian newspaper published on July 21, the two major pharmaceutical trade groups—the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA)—have launched an effort to try to enlist patient groups in a campaign to oppose AllTrials. This effort must be vociferously opposed, and pharmaceutical companies that belong to these trade groups should publicly reject it.

We call on all patient groups and other stakeholders who have yet to sign up to support AllTrials to do so.

We call on PhRMA and EFPIA to stop their last-ditch attempt to avoid the disclosure of all clinical trials results, which is essential to the improvement of public health.
