Objectives for Module 1:

  1. Discuss the difference between HIV prevention for HIV-negative people, HIV prevention for people living with HIV, and HIV testing
  2. Discuss the evidence-based HIV prevention options we have available
  3. Overview of new tools in development

In many ways, we are in an HIV-prevention renaissance. We have more options than ever for both HIV-negative and HIV-positive individuals to stop HIV transmission: the groundbreaking HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 052 and PARTNERS studies have firmly established that treatment as prevention (TasP) works—there have been no documented cases of someone with an undetectable viral load in these trials passing the virus on to someone else. At the same time, several studies have definitively shown that pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has the potential to revolutionize HIV prevention for HIV-negative individuals—one pill, once a day, taken consistently can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV by up to 99%. PrEP and TasP, along with other proven methods including post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), condoms, and unused syringes, have the potential to end epidemics—they are just that effective.

In this module, we help community advocates get up to speed on the current HIV prevention toolbox: what tools exist and the evidence that supports their effectiveness.
