This fact sheet on breakthrough COVID-19 infections among people living with HIV was co-produced by TAG and our partners the Black AIDS Institute, Southern AIDS Coalition and the COVID-19 Prevention Network. A review of the scholarly research shows that while people with HIV are at somewhat elevated risk for acquiring COVID-19 after vaccination, they are not more likely overall to experience severe outcomes unless their CD4 T cell counts are below 350. This suggests that people living with HIV with moderate immune suppression may benefit from additional vaccine doses, which the CDC currently recommends only for people with untreated HIV or advanced HIV (with CD4 T cell counts below 200).
